Blue Crane Works, in Hamilton, Ontario, builds machine readable websites. Every page is published twice: once for people, and once as a clean Markdown copy that AI assistants read directly. The site can also carry an AI business card, a facts file that assistants like ChatGPT and Claude read for your hours, services and prices. Sites are a $995 build and $99 a month, or $0 down at $189 a month for the first year, built and run for you.
What is a machine readable website?
It is a website a search engine or an AI assistant can fetch, read and quote without guessing. On ours that means three things you can check for yourself: every crawler receives the same full page a browser does, every page has a plain Markdown copy at its own address, and the business facts are published once, in a card a machine reads, built from the site so the two can never disagree.
| What | Why it matters | Check it on this site |
|---|---|---|
| The full page, for every crawler | A firewall or bot rule can turn an AI crawler away while the site looks fine in a browser, and no ranking report shows it. | The crawler readout for this domain, byte for byte. |
| A Markdown copy of every page | Assistants read plain text far more cheaply than a designed web page. On our largest build the copies came out 79 percent smaller. | This page as Markdown: web-design-hamilton-ontario.md |
| An AI business card | One set of facts (name, hours, services, area, prices) that an assistant reads directly instead of piecing it together from pages. | Ours: facts.json |
| A live connection for assistants | An assistant that supports it can search the site, quote a page with its address, and pass on a customer's quote request. | Running on this site and on a client's site today. |
The plain-language version of how the Markdown copy works is in llms.txt and Markdown for agents, explained.
How do other AI web agencies in Hamilton, Ontario compare?
On 3 October 2026 we tested the 14 firms that Google's results and AI answers named for AI search and web design in Hamilton, Ontario, fetching each homepage the way the AI companies' own crawlers do. None of the 14 published Markdown copies at their own addresses, none had an AI business card, and three turned away ChatGPT's or Claude's crawler. One served Markdown when an assistant asked for it.
| Check | Blue Crane Works | The 14 other firms |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown copy at its own address | Yes | 0 of 14 |
| Markdown served when an assistant asks for it | Yes | 1 of 14 |
| AI business card (facts file) | Yes | 0 of 14 |
| Live connection for assistants | Yes | 0 of 14 |
| llms.txt summary for assistants | Yes | 7 of 14 |
| ChatGPT's and Claude's crawlers get the full homepage | Yes | 11 of 14 |
How we tested: one fetch of each homepage per check, from Hamilton, using the crawler names OpenAI and Anthropic publish. A homepage test is a snapshot of one day, not an audit of a whole site, and any firm can change any of this tomorrow. We do not name the firms, because the point is the gap and not them. Several of them do good work; what they mostly sell is optimisation of a site, where what we sell is the site itself, built machine readable from the first page.
Who is behind Blue Crane Works?
Blue Crane Works is a Hamilton, Ontario company started by Trevor, a millwright with more than eighteen years in the trades, which is why the first clients were trades. It is partnered with Innovation Factory, Hamilton's regional innovation centre at McMaster Innovation Park, and powered by Microsoft for Startups. More on the about page.
What does a website cost in Hamilton, Ontario?
Ours is a $995 build and $99 a month Care, plus HST. Pay the build in full at signing for 10% off, half at signing and half before launch, or nothing down at $189 a month for the first twelve months. That covers the build, the hosting, the changes you ask for, and the technical work that makes the site readable by search engines and assistants. Add-ons are $50 a month each.
We publish the reasoning, and what the two other ways of buying a website actually cost, in what does a business website cost in Hamilton in 2026. The short version: a one-off project has no mechanism for staying current, so it decays until it needs replacing, and the replacement is quoted as a fresh project.
Do you do SEO in Hamilton as well, or just the website?
It is the same job here, not a second invoice. A site we build is crawlable, has real headings, real text in the HTML, a sitemap, and pages that answer the questions your customers actually type. That is most of what an SEO retainer does in its first three months, and we do it as part of building the thing.
What we will not do is promise you a ranking. Bing states the limit in its own guidelines: "SEO does not guarantee rankings or traffic, and GEO does not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences." Anyone quoting you a position on Google is quoting something they do not control. We guarantee the work and show you the measurements.
What about local search and Google Maps?
That is a separate system from your website and it matters for a local business. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and your Google Business Profile is what feeds it. We make sure the profile and the website agree with each other, because when they disagree every machine reading both has to pick one, and you do not get to choose which.
The same facts feed AI answers about local businesses, which we go through in does my Google Business Profile matter for AI answers.
Which areas do you actually cover?
We are in Hamilton, Ontario and work across the region: Dundas, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, Burlington, Oakville, Grimsby, Beamsville, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, and remotely elsewhere in Ontario. We are naming the towns we have actually delivered in rather than listing every place within an hour's drive.
What local work can I look at?
Two are public, with the numbers, and both are businesses in this region rather than stock examples:
| Business | Where | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Amarettos | Dundas | A 41-year-old clothing shop taken from one page to twenty-eight, with every crawler verified. Case study. |
| Garage Doorman | Grimsby | Two companies, two domains, 76 pages, both moved off Wix, zero audit blockers. Case study. |
If you want to check our own work rather than our clients', run any page on this site through a crawler test, or read the AI Visibility Pass page, which publishes the readout for this domain including the rows that are not flattering.
Why would a Hamilton business care about AI answers?
Because a growing share of "who does X near me" now gets answered rather than listed, and an answer names one or two businesses instead of ten. Pew found that people click a link far less often when an AI summary appears above the results. If the assistant cannot read your site, you are not in the running for that answer, and no ranking report will tell you.
This is the part of the job most web designers do not do, and it is free to check. Our checker fetches your homepage the way a browser does and the way OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and bingbot do, and tells you in about ten seconds whether they are getting the same page. If it comes back clean we tell you that too, and you do not need us.
The full explanation is in why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT, which goes through the six reasons in the order worth checking.
How do we start?
